40/60cm Bare Root Photinia Red Robin (Photinia x fraseri Red Robin)
Photinia Red Robin is a beautiful evergreen hedge that showcases glossy, red leaves in the spring before maturing into stunning dark green foliage further on in the year.
Photinia is the perfect hedge when looking for year-round interest in your garden. Popping up intricate, white flowers along with bold, scarlet leaves in spring (which deepen into a dark green), Red Robin will heartily attract attention in your garden. Best yet, wildlife are attracted to the plant too, with its wonderful berries that burst through from autumn to winter.
Photinia has an average growth rate of 30cm per year, and can easily be kept up to a height of 4m tall. We do not recommend the Red Robin where extra privacy is required, however, as the plant is not particularly dense growing.

Photinia Red Robin generally prefers a sunny home; however, it will still grow well in partial shade, and a well-drained soil is best to enable it to exceedingly thrive. It is a frost-resiliant plant, but young plants must be protected in the winter. Red Robin may have the occassional leaf drop, meaning you will need to carefully prune back, and apply a slow-release fertiliser during spring.

Photinia Red Robin should generally be trimmed to a formal hedge shape in late Winter, as well as early Spring. However, if you wish, you can also leave it to grow informally and just trim down the width and height when need be.
- Prepare the ground by digging the hole/trench twice as wide as the diameter of the plant's root system, but about the same depth. Ensure all weeds have been removed.
- Spread out the roots, ensuring planting depth is correct. The part where the roots flare out should be level with the surface of the soil (you may need to remove any excess soil on top of pot grown plants to reveal this point).
- Mix in some organic matter/compost to the excess soil that will be used to backfill the hole. If you are using RootGrow, do so by sprinkling a thin layer on the bottom of the planting hole.
- Water the hole well, and place the plant in. Backfill with soil, ensuring it is worked in to the plant's roots. Gently pat down to secure the plant, and water again if it seems dry (this is especially important if planting during hot/dry weather).
- Finish off by mulching to a depth of 7.5cm after planting. This will suppress weeds and help the soil to retain warmth and moisture.
- Regularly water for the first year or so after being planted. This is vital for the plant's survival.
