Photinia Red Robin (Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin')
Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin'
Photinia Red Robin is a beautiful evergreen hedge that showcases glossy, red leaves in the spring before maturing into stunning, dark green foliage further on in the year.
Photinia is the perfect hedge when looking for year-round interest in your garden. Popping up intricate, white flowers along with bold, scarlet leaves in spring (which deepen into a dark green), Red Robin will heartily attract attention in your garden. Best yet, wildlife are attracted to the plant too, with its wonderful berries that burst through from autumn to winter.
Photinia has an average growth rate of 30cm per year, and can easily be kept up to a height of 4m tall. We do not recommend the Red Robin where extra privacy is required, however, as the plant is not particularly dense growing.
Photinia Red Robin generally prefers a sunny home; however, it will still grow well in partial shade, and a well-drained soil is best to enable it to exceedingly thrive. It is a frost-resiliant plant, but young plants must be protected in the winter. Red Robin may have the occassional leaf drop, meaning you will need to carefully prune back, and apply a slow-release fertiliser during spring.

Photinia Red Robin should generally be trimmed to a formal hedge shape in late Winter, as well as early Spring. However, if you wish, you can also leave it to grow informally and just trim down the width and height when need be.
When should I plant?
The best time, in general, to plant your hedging is during the autumn, but potted plants can be planted at any time of year if they get enough water, and the ground is not frozen.
How far apart do you plant?
Depending on the size of plant, you will need to place your hedging plants around 2ft apart. This does depend on how quickly you're looking for the hedge to establish, however, as we recommend up to 5 plants per metre for the smaller plant sizes.
How to plant:
Ensure the area is clear of other plants, weeds, and grass first.
Dig the holes or a trench for the plants, that's twice the width of the plant's base. When you are digging the hole, ensure you have churned it up at the bottom so the roots can settle easier. If you have a very sandy/hardy soil, then put in some loam-based compost. In terms of normal soil, you will need some controlled-release feed to give the planting a starting boost.
Once this is all done, you can put the plant in! Place it into the middle of the hole carefully and slowly, making sure the top of the roots are 1/2 inch below the soils surface. Refill the hole, then press gently around the edges to secure the soil.
